Summary

A family returns to their hometown—and to the dark past that haunts them still—in this masterpiece of literary horror by the New York Times bestselling author of Wanderers

Long ago, Nathan lived in a house in the country with his abusive father—and has never told his family what happened there。

Long ago, Maddie was a little girl making dolls in her bedroom when she saw something she shouldn’t have—and is trying to remember that lost trauma by making haunting sculptures。

Long ago, something sinister, something hungry, walked in the tunnels and the mountains and the coal mines of their hometown in rural Pennsylvania。

Now, Nate and Maddie Graves are married, and they have moved back to their hometown with their son, Oliver。

And now what happened long ago is happening again 。 。 。 and it is happening to Oliver。 He meets a strange boy who becomes his best friend, a boy with secrets of his own and a taste for dark magic。

This dark magic puts them at the heart of a battle of good versus evil and a fight for the soul of the family—and perhaps for all of the world。 But the Graves family has a secret weapon in this battle: their love for one another。

Evil comes to life in Chuck Wendig's novel, "The Book of Accidents," a tale of obsession, memories and the supernatural。 It's the story of a family - Nathan, Maddie and their son Oliver - who are forced to acknowledge powers beyond their control。 Oliver feels others' feelings so deeply that his family moves away from the city and back to the country where his late grandfather lived。 Nathan takes a job as a park ranger and Maddie resumes her career creating sculptures out of junk。 But they aren't Evil comes to life in Chuck Wendig's novel, "The Book of Accidents," a tale of obsession, memories and the supernatural。 It's the story of a family - Nathan, Maddie and their son Oliver - who are forced to acknowledge powers beyond their control。 Oliver feels others' feelings so deeply that his family moves away from the city and back to the country where his late grandfather lived。 Nathan takes a job as a park ranger and Maddie resumes her career creating sculptures out of junk。 But they aren't alone。 An evil power once locked away deep in the Pennsylvania coal mines has resurfaced。 And now it's coming for Oliver。Sculptures come alive and the dead are revived。 Fear hides behind kindness。 But feelings? Those can't hide secrets forever。Wendig is well-known for his horrifying imagination, and it's running wild in "The Book of Accidents。" Nathan and Maddie rediscover their past - and powers - as Oliver struggles with his own。 He makes friends with an odd, secret-filled boy with a connection to dark magic。 Wendig's characters find themselves in a fight to save their family and possibly the world。 What they find is that good often has shades of evil and that love is a powerful weapon。ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for my opinion。 。。。more

Going to DNF this for now。 Haven't really been too invested in the story (nor can I commit to 400+ more pages of very slow-paced writing)。 The "horror" moments of the book were insidious and I enjoyed the creeping imminence of something big happening but it's taking too long to get there, and right now, it feels like it's leading towards a "battle between good and evil" than a more horror route。 Going to DNF this for now。 Haven't really been too invested in the story (nor can I commit to 400+ more pages of very slow-paced writing)。 The "horror" moments of the book were insidious and I enjoyed the creeping imminence of something big happening but it's taking too long to get there, and right now, it feels like it's leading towards a "battle between good and evil" than a more horror route。 。。。more

I should have known better than to read a book that was described as “literary” on the back cover。 Literary Horror, to be exact。 I don’t read a lot of horror but I like a good creepy story every once in a while。 The premise sounded interesting and the book got off to a great start。 There’s a serial killer about to be executed, a spooky area of town where there used to be a mine, a family that moves into the father’s childhood home which seems like it might be haunted…Then we find that some of th I should have known better than to read a book that was described as “literary” on the back cover。 Literary Horror, to be exact。 I don’t read a lot of horror but I like a good creepy story every once in a while。 The premise sounded interesting and the book got off to a great start。 There’s a serial killer about to be executed, a spooky area of town where there used to be a mine, a family that moves into the father’s childhood home which seems like it might be haunted…Then we find that some of the people in town are not what they seem。 Some of the characters realize they have magical abilities。 There may or may not be a demon possession。 Oh yes, and there’s also a multiverse。With all of that going on, I was expecting a spectacular ending that wrapped everything up and pulled all of these plot points together。 What happened instead was a battle between the two main characters and then an abrupt ending where nothing really gets explained。 Apparently a “literary” novel can just throw stuff at the wall for 500+ pages and then just stop。I really wanted to like this book and I enjoyed the first half a lot but the ending really fell flat。 。。。more

Chuck Wendig’s books are fabulous – strong plots and quirky characters, but wow, he really took it up a notch with The Book of Accidents。 Reminiscent of the big 80s horror tomes (think, King or McCammon), Wendig delivers a fresh take on the return-home-to-creepy-town story with flushed out and complicated characters。 Maddie and Nate Graves make the big city move to Nate’s small childhood town in hopes that it will ease the growing pains of their shy and sensitive teenage son, Olly。 What they do Chuck Wendig’s books are fabulous – strong plots and quirky characters, but wow, he really took it up a notch with The Book of Accidents。 Reminiscent of the big 80s horror tomes (think, King or McCammon), Wendig delivers a fresh take on the return-home-to-creepy-town story with flushed out and complicated characters。 Maddie and Nate Graves make the big city move to Nate’s small childhood town in hopes that it will ease the growing pains of their shy and sensitive teenage son, Olly。 What they do not realize is that their son isn’t just overly empathic; he can actually see and feel the pain, discomfort, and anger of others。 Soon they each find themselves in a classic struggle of good versus evil, battling both real and figurative ghosts from the past。 I really loved the tight knit closeness of the family and the more modern take on their characters。 This is great chunkster of a book to sit down and get lost in。 Thank you Chuck Wendig! My Review ofTHE BOOK OF ACCIDENTSBy Author, Chuck WendigGifted & Published by Del Rey BooksOn Sale: 7/20/21 - Purchase Link in my Bio ******This was a book along the lines & similar to ones written by Stephen King。 It was not only a thriller, it was full of sci-fi and the atmospheric disposition was certainly one to take you in and out of the current world。 It was deeply enthralling, though at times I did get confused and had to go back and reread a page or two。 Be prepared it is a thick book an My Review ofTHE BOOK OF ACCIDENTSBy Author, Chuck WendigGifted & Published by Del Rey BooksOn Sale: 7/20/21 - Purchase Link in my Bio ******This was a book along the lines & similar to ones written by Stephen King。 It was not only a thriller, it was full of sci-fi and the atmospheric disposition was certainly one to take you in and out of the current world。 It was deeply enthralling, though at times I did get confused and had to go back and reread a page or two。 Be prepared it is a thick book and its pace was brisk and vividly rendered。 The plot evolves around one main character’s extreme compassionate reactions he feels for others and things that he sees happen throughout the world。 And then there is the protagonist that seeks out and sees this compassion as a vulnerability, and use it as a ploy so that they can end the world。 I basically viewed this as good vs。 evil and it is a book that once you start reading you won’t be able to stop。*****Synopsis:Long ago, Nathan lived in a house in the country with his abusive father—and has never told his family what happened there。 Long ago, Maddie was a little girl making dolls in her bedroom when she saw something she shouldn’t have—and is trying to remember that lost trauma by making haunting sculptures。 Long ago, something sinister, something hungry, walked in the tunnels and the mountains and the coal mines of their hometown in rural Pennsylvania。 Now, Nate and Maddie Graves are married, and they have moved back to their hometown with their son, Oliver。   And now what happened long ago is happening again 。 。 。 and it is happening to Oliver。 He meets a strange boy who becomes his best friend, a boy with secrets of his own and a taste for dark magic。 This dark magic puts them at the heart of a battle of good versus evil and a fight for the soul of the family—and perhaps for all of the world。 But the Graves family has a secret weapon in this battle: their love for one another。 。。。more

Oliver is a super empath who feels everyone’s pain and wants to help。 His mother, Maddie, is very artistic, sensitive and has creative powers that she does not really know she has。 His father, Nate, is a Fish and Game Officer and is struggling from the impact of abuse by his father when he was younger。 Well written and easy to read。 Decent plot involving multiple timelines, a good monster and a mysterious young man who seems to want to help Oliver。 Reminds me of the creature features I used to w Oliver is a super empath who feels everyone’s pain and wants to help。 His mother, Maddie, is very artistic, sensitive and has creative powers that she does not really know she has。 His father, Nate, is a Fish and Game Officer and is struggling from the impact of abuse by his father when he was younger。 Well written and easy to read。 Decent plot involving multiple timelines, a good monster and a mysterious young man who seems to want to help Oliver。 Reminds me of the creature features I used to watch as a boy。 Great beach read over a holiday weekend。 Not scary。 Thanks Netgalley and Random House for the ARC。 。。。more

I love "weird" stories。 I'm a huge fan of Stephen King and The Twilight Zone and those types of stories。 The Book of Accidents (Chuck Wendig) began as a King novel。 But (to me) it continued to get stranger and stranger。 I'm giving it 2 1/2 stars, and since it is impossible upping it to 3 stars。 I want to thank NetGalley and Del Rey for an early copy to review。 I love "weird" stories。 I'm a huge fan of Stephen King and The Twilight Zone and those types of stories。 The Book of Accidents (Chuck Wendig) began as a King novel。 But (to me) it continued to get stranger and stranger。 I'm giving it 2 1/2 stars, and since it is impossible upping it to 3 stars。 I want to thank NetGalley and Del Rey for an early copy to review。 。。。more

Like a Stephen King book。 If you like King, you’ll like this。 I found it a bit too dark for my taste。
